About the Blog

Welcome to Roots and Reckoning, a space where faith deconstruction is never-ending, big topics are explored, and the journey of self-discovery is embraced. This blog is a personal odyssey through the intricate tapestry of beliefs, weaving through the threads of Mormon heritage, social justice, activism, and the pursuit of Christlike compassion.

ROOTS:
In this corner of the internet, we embark on the courageous journey of questioning, challenging, and deconstructing faith by taking a thoughtful and critical eye to the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's a process of unraveling the layers of belief systems, unraveling the tightly held notions to discover the essence of spirituality and authenticity.

Roots and Reckoning is a reflective exploration of my Mormon roots. It's a platform to navigate the complexities of heritage, confronting the past (systemic racism in the church, polygamy, oppression of women, BoM historicity claims, etc.), and understanding how it shapes the present. It's not just a reckoning with personal history but an invitation for readers to join the dialogue and share their experiences.

RECKONING:
Roots and Reckoning is a call to action, a rallying cry for social justice and activism. Here, we dive into discussions about equality, human rights, and dismantling oppressive systems. It's not just about understanding the issues but actively engaging in the work to create positive change. Roots and Reckoning is a safe space to grapple with the pain inflicted by oppressive societal or personal systems. It's a raw and honest exploration of the emotional toll, acknowledging the struggles and finding strength in vulnerability.

At its core, this blog is committed to pursuing Christlike virtues. Its purpose is to push me to embody love, compassion, and empathy in the face of all I've been handed by those who've gone before me. It's about the ongoing process of becoming a better human being for oneself and the broader community.

Join me on this journey of introspection, dialogue, and transformation. Let Roots and Reckoning be a place of reflection as we navigate the complexities of faith, heritage, justice, pain, and the pursuit of a genuinely Christlike existence. Let's explore the roots that ground us and reckon with the challenges that propel us forward.

About Me

I am a woman in my late 20s. I grew up in a very active conservative Mormon household. Through my childhood and teens, I was the most Molly Mormon in Mormonville.

I work in healthcare with an emphasis in serving children with disabilities and their families. I try my hardest to always me learning from disabled writers/thinkers and to be an advocate for disability rights in my work. I subscribe to the social model of disability. I am a late-diagnosed autistic woman and I am constantly learning new things about myself as I learn to work with my autistic brain instead of against it. I do not use functioning labels. I do use identity first language most of the time to describe myself. I would consider myself a low-support-needs autistic individual.

I am bi or pan which to me means that my capacity for love and affection tends to be more about who a person is than the body that person inhabits. I intentionally use the abbreviated "bi" or "pan" to describe myself as opposed to "bisexual" or "pansexual" in a deliberate attempt to direct attention away from the oversexualized assumptions associated with being bi, pan, or otherwise queer. Being queer isn't about sex. It's about love.

I am a feminist.

I am on a journey to learn more about the importance of intersectionality in activism and Black American history generally from a wide range of writers and content creators.

I am an active participating member in my ward in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'm married to a wonderful man who I love very much and who loves me too. I love my dog. I love to crochet. I love to write.
